First Baptist Church of Carthage

Who are we?

We are the local body of Jesus Christ that puts God first in our lives and want to share him with this community and our world. We are a military friendly church that understands that service and supports our military and their families. We are a church that worships God with a blended style of music, putting God at the center of that worship. Please come and you will always feel welcome whatever your background. You will find that we are not a perfect church, but God is our first love.

Church Covenant

Having been led by the Spirit of God to receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord and on the profession of our faith (Rom 10:9-10), and having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38), we now solemnly and joyfully entered into covenant as one body in Christ.

We dedicate ourselves individually, and as a church, to walk together in Christian love (Rom 8:38-39), to seek daily to grow in grace and in the truth as it is revealed in Jesus Christ and in the Bible (2 Tim 3:16), and to give generously and regularly of our time, tithes and offerings that the ministry of the church in the Kingdom of God may be strong and fruitful in our midst and in the world     (2 Cor 9:6-7).

We also engage in this covenant to maintain family and personal devotions. We believe that marriage is between a man and a woman (Matt 19:4-5). In marriage, we rear our children in Christian fellowship. We believe in the right to life and that God holds all life sacred (Gal 1:15). We witness to our kindred and friends concerning the saving grace of our Lord, to conduct ourselves as citizens in the world community in such manner as to bring honor to our Lord, and in all things to seek to advance the Kingdom of God on earth (Matt 28:18-20).

We further engage to observe at all times the principles of Christian love and fellowship in manner and speech, to watch over one another in brotherly love, and to avoid creating any dissension or disharmony in the church or this fellowship (Matt 18:15-17). We promise to support our pastor (Heb 13:17), to minister to each other in times of need, and be in prayer for each other.

We moreover engage that when we remove from this place, we will as soon as possible unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant in the principle of God’s word (Heb 10:24-25).

Our Church History

The First Baptist Church of Carthage was constituted in May of 1858. For over 70 years the church was located on Ray Street until it was relocated to its current location on McNeill Street in March of 1928. On October 3, 1859 the church was admitted into the Sandy Creek Baptist Association. During the 1890s, a Sunday School and Women’s Missionary Union were established. Reverend O.J. Hagler became the first full-time pastor on August 11, 1946. The church has had 41 pastors since 1858. At present, Brian Murphy is our pastor. In 2003, a new Fellowship Hall was built where the old parsonage had once stood.

The First Baptist Church of Carthage continues to support missions locally, statewide, and around the world. It is our Christian goal and responsibility to work toward fulfilling the Great Commission the Lord Jesus Christ gave to his disciples in Matthew 28: 18-20.
